Joel Schiller

I am a retiree living in Chatham, Columbia County.  Without formal schooling, I have been painting for 50 years, mainly for my own enjoyment.  I have developed my own techniques which may not be what they teach in art school but they suit what I am trying to do. I am intrigued by how chance events, what tubes of paint you happen to have on hand, your long-thought-out decisions and sudden inspirations about the next brushstroke, all leave a record and when they dry are frozen and preserved, an object, a painting with a permanent identity.

I like to use chance in various ways in painting, and to combine it with  conscious decisions.  I admire a lot of 20th century artists;  I feel the innovations of the expressionists and surrealists established the full and free  use of imagination in painting for the first time. I like painting scenes from mythology, biblical, classical, religious, because they are traditional subjects so when you paint them you are joining and commenting on work by a long line of artists.  I enjoy giving them a modernist, surrealist, dadaist slant, so my work can be both traditional and personal.

Since retiring and moving to Columbia County I have showed my paintings at:
